Searchable Categories

Categories are a specific way to 'group' similar students together based on attributes provided by Banner. Categories are 'fluid' and update nightly when Banner and Navigate sync, meaning that information may be delayed by one day and can change from day to day. Based on user permissions, categories are viewable on the overview tab of the student’s profile and searchable in the features: Advanced Search and Reporting.

Definition

1st Academic Probation

When an undergraduate student's cumulative GPA is less than 2.00 (based on student’s performance in the last term they completed) 

1st Academic Suspension

When an undergraduate student on academic probation has a cumulative GPA less than 2.00 for two consecutive semesters (Fall and Spring) of enrollment. A student must earn a minimum of a 2.50 term GPA for each (Fall and Spring) semester or raise their cumulative GPA to a 2.00 to avoid being placed on academic suspension. (student tag will remain until the student successfully completes a subsequent term) 

2nd Academic Probation 

When an undergraduate student returns from 1st Academic Suspension. A student must earn a minimum 2.00 semester GPA the first semester back and raise their cumulative GPA to at least 2.00 by the end of the second semester back or earn a minimum 2.50 semester GPA for every subsequent semester following the suspension until their cumulative GPA is 2.00 or greater. 

2nd Academic Suspension

When an undergraduate student does not meet the requirements of 2nd Academic Probation, the student will be suspended from continued enrollment for a full academic year cycle. Ex. A student suspended at the end of a Fall term may not enroll until the end of the following Fall term. (student tag will remain on the student’s profile until the student successfully completes a subsequent term) 

3rd Academic Probation 

When an undergraduate student returns from 2nd Academic Suspension. A student must earn a minimum 2.00 semester GPA the first semester back and raise their cumulative GPA to at least 2.00 by the end of the second semester back or earn a minimum 2.50 semester GPA for every subsequent semester following the suspension until their cumulative GPA is 2.00 or greater. 

Academic Warning

Undergraduate Students earning less than a 2.00 term GPA, but with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher 

Active Hold

Student has an active registration hold on their account 

Applied for Degree

Student has submitted their application for degree in any term 

Corps of Cadets 

Student is enrolled in the Corps of Cadets program

FAFSA Filed 

Student has submitted FAFSA for the current academic year

FERPA Waiver on file 

Student has an active FERPA waiver which is viewable in HokieSPA 

Final Academic Suspension

Student is permanently dismissed from enrollment for failure to meet the minimum returning performance requirements after a second academic suspension. 

First Generation

Student has self-identified during admissions application as first generation. VT defines First Generation as neither parent/guardian has earned a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university. Students can update their status by contacting FirstGen@vt.edu 

Graduate Prelim/Final Exam Scheduled 

Graduate student has submitted a form request to the Graduate School and the request has been approved 

Graduate Program Dismissal

Graduate students who have been placed on graduate program probation and do not achieve a 3.00 GPA within one semester of being placed on probation will be dismissed from the Graduate School. 

Graduate Program Probation 

Graduate Students whose cumulative GPA falls below a "B" (3.00 GPA) will be placed on probation by the Graduate School. Enrollment for one semester of probation normally is permitted to remedy an unsatisfactory GPA. If the student does not achieve a 3.0 GPA within one semester after being placed on probation, the Graduate School will consult with the department about dismissal of the student from Graduate School 

Graduate Student

Student is currently enrolled in a graduate program (this tag will appear on a student’s profile during their first term of enrollment as a graduate student and after- Ex. A first time enrollee for a Fall semester will not have the graduate student tag in the preceding Summer term 

Graduated

Student has graduated from any degree granting program at Virginia Tech. An enrolled graduate student may have this tag if they previously completed an undergraduate degree at VT 

Graduated-XX

Student has graduated from any degree granting program with the level abbreviations: AS, UG, GR, etc. 

Honors

Virginia Tech Honors College students working toward the completion of the Honors Laureate Diploma (HLD), which is the academic certification earned by completing Honors academic requirements 

International

Students who are not a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, who are in this country on a visa or temporary basis, and who do not have the right to remain indefinitely. In the federal taxonomy of race and ethnicity codes, these students would be classified as non-resident aliens 

Military Dependents

A student receiving military dependent educational benefits 

Minor XXX

Student is enrolled in a minor. The category will display as “minor” with the abbreviations for the minor program Ex. “Minor ABB” for adaptive brain and behavior minor 

NCAA- XXXXX

Student is a member of an NCAA sport, with an indication for the specific sport team 

Non-resident alien

Student who is not a US citizen and does not meet additional criteria for tax purposes 

Plan of Study Submitted

Graduate student who has submitted a plan of study to the Graduate School 

Transfers

Student is a Transfer student as identified from Admissions 

Veterans

A veteran is a student who self-identifies as a veteran and who, with the exception of dependents/family, received GI benefits at any time while enrolled at Virginia Tech 

Virtual 

A virtual-only student is one who, in a given term, is taking only virtual/online credits. This student is identified by having total credit > 0, credit online > 0, and total credit = credit online 

125% Warning

Student was notified that according to our records, they have attempted total credits equaling or exceeding 100% of the hours required for their declared degree program 

125% Exceeded

Student was notified that they have attempted total credits equaling or exceeding 125% of the hours required for their declared degree program. As such, the state required tuition surcharge will be applied
